If you follow me on Facebook or saw me this past spring you were probably regaled with the amazing tale of Sophia's allergies. The poor girl has come down with a cold every spring since she was 1. It would linger for two or three weeks and then go away. No big deal. This past spring, however, that little cold turned into what we all assumed was the most epic case of pink eye ever on the planet. Her eyes swelled shut, turned stop sign red, and ran like a faucet.....filled with pus. GROSS! Two visits to the doctor and we realized it wasn't actually pink eye, but seemed to be significant seasonal allergies. Turns out that cold wasn't a cold, it was a mild case of allergic rhinitis. Oops. After some trial and error we got her feeling better with a trio of Zyrtec, Flonase, and medicated eye drops. She took those pretty much all spring. Then summer came and she was much better. She maybe used the drops and/or Flonase once a week. It was wonderful!
The first week of school it was cooler around here and with it Sophia's allergies came back. So, back on the trio we went. The nurse at her school is awesome and lets her come in on her way to or from lunch and recess to do the Flonase and eye drops so she can make it through the day. With the temperature fluctuating the way it has the last month its very hit or miss how she's feeling, but she has been pretty well controlled, thankfully. Last night she started complaining of a sore throat, though. This morning it was worse so she took all three meds, but still wasn't feeling up to going to school. I honestly wasn't sure if it was allergies, a cold, or just a long week. As the morning went on, though, we discovered it was definitely her allergies. She is no where near were she was this spring, but the poor girl is definitely suffering. Hopefully a day at home resting and two days in a row of all three medications will get her on the med, though, as we have a trip to the Omaha Zoo planned for tomorrow.
